Nicola dreamt, built & now runs Mrs Mills' Yurts

Autumn is my favourite season, its about the calming of the busy, the transition towards hibernation.

As the days grows shorter and the air crisps with the promise of a new season it’s time to get excited about Glamping in Autumn. Many glamping sites wind down their season in October but here at Mrs Mills Yurts we think this is the best season to come and visit so we are so happy to remain open until the end of November.

It’s rare to find somewhere so immersed in nature to stay in October and November that’s as cosy and comfortable as the Yurts here at Mrs Mills. Nestled in the ancient woodlands of the Forest of Dean lies a sanctuary that invites nature enthusiasts, adventurers and foodies to come and view the tapestry of colours that the season offers just by opening your Yurt door.

As the leaves turn from vibrant green to hues of amber, ruby and gold – the forest carpet of colour surrounds you on every footpath directly from your yurt. We invite you to witness nature’s most spectacular transformation. All with the luxury of wood burning hot tubs, catered meals, campfires and the easy to light wood burners that will keep you cosy into the night.

Glamping in Autumn is about a unique blend of comfort and wilderness. Each yurt has cosy fluffy duvets, luxury throws and a chest full of extra blankets. There are hot water bottles and sheepskin rugs and soft towelling robes for when you come out of the hot tub. Nicola will have your hot tub ready for you to dive into on arrival to make as much use of the daylight, but there is gentle lighting and lanterns for night time so you can really get to enjoy the stars from the comfort of your tub.

We include all the wood you need for the hot tub, campfires and plenty for the wood burner too. We also have fool proof heat packs to buy so there is no reason to worry about being cold. Nicola can show you how to light it if you’re not sure and is always on hand to help throughout your stay.

During the month of November we bring check in times an hour earlier so you can make the most of the day. The Forest colours are always the best in November and these stays can be the most rewarding. Walking the dogs over May hill in November are my most favourite – knowing things are slowing and soon we will rest for winter.

Staying at Mrs Mills’ Yurts is always a culinary treat. Our seasonal menu changes towards rich Beouf Bourguignon, Curries and Chilli con Carne. Another wonderful feature with the wood burners is that they all have cooking plates on top. So, you can warm your campfire meal inside if the outside just isn’t possible! There is nothing more romantic and cosier than sitting by the candlelit dining table inside with the fire ranging and your dinner warming through on top.

Don’t forget you can still toast marshmallows just by opening the door. There are still BBQ packs available too though – a banger cooked on a stick outside is as campy as it gets! Mrs Mills changes up her cocktail list too – to rich foraged martinis and creamy cinnamon and brandy cups.

As for Autumnal activities there are no end of things in the Forest of Dean. Segway experiences from Go Ape are such a fun way to see the Forest as it morphs into its finest glory. There are foraging tours locally and some wonderful classes in the local villages outstanding cookery school Hart’s Barn

The Forest Showcase food festival is in early October every year as well as the Cheltenham literally festival – all easy to visit within half an hour. There is plenty to keep you occupied before returning to a cosy night in front of the fire. During the half term weeks we carve pumpkins and make a trail for the children around the site – safe for them to navigate on their own while you have a few minutes peace! We collaborate with a local pottery school and provide ceramic painting in our large indoor play room where there is also a table tennis table and dart board.

We also arrange pamper sessions for those over 16 that can be booked from £35 for half an hour. Each booking during half term also includes a family ticket to a local farms Pumpkin picking field which is quite a sight!

Autumn glamping is a retreat for the soul. The last chance to get outside for a break bathing in nature with many creature comforts. Just before we hibernate for the winter. Glamping in Autumn is an opportunity to step out of the chaos of everyday life and into a sanctuary where time slows, where devices can be left behind and natures beauty takes central stage. Collecting firewood and living by the fire connects you to the nature around you. The scent of wood smoke and the rustling of the leaves around you as the fire crackles away makes autumnal glamping the best glamping there is. It is truly magical and something we should all experience time and time again.
