Is it too cold to go Glamping in winter?

Will I enjoy winter glamping?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions when customers are looking to book a winter break.

Whether or not you should go glamping in winter depends on your preferences, the type of experience you’re looking for, and how well you’re prepared for the colder conditions.

Glamping in the UK during winter can be a wonderful experience if you’re well-prepared, and many people enjoy it for the cosy, nature-immersive escape it offers.

Reasons to Go Glamping in Winter:

  1. Peaceful Escape: Winter is typically a quieter time for glamping, which means you’ll have more privacy and solitude. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this could be a great opportunity.
  2. Unique Experience: The winter landscape can be beautiful and serene, with frosty mornings, mist, and low afternoon light which all creates a magical atmosphere. If you enjoy nature during its more tranquil season, winter glamping can offer a memorable, serene experience.
  3. Cosy and Warm: Many glamping sites are often designed to be comfortable in winter.  Many have wood-burning stoves, warm bedding, Hot tubs.   Check there are hot water bottles, and extra blankets. If you’re someone who enjoys the idea of being cozy and warm indoors while the chill is outside, winter glamping will be perfect for you.  Living by the wood burner and feeling a sense of achievement in keeping the fire roaring adds to the experience.
  4. Winter Activities: If you’re into outdoor activities like hiking, stargazing, and if your glamping site has a hot tub – relaxing in a hot tub in the middle of winter is simply divine.  Glamping in winter can offer some unique experiences in a peaceful setting.

Winter Glamping Essentials

Are you ready to escape the chaos of the city?  The great, grey busyness, pollution and looming deadlines can be left behind for a spontaneous winter break.

A peaceful winter getaway where you can swap city stress for the crackling of a wood-burner and the fresh, crisp air of the countryside is the answer.

Winter glamping is a chance to hibernate and reset in ultimate comfort.

Here are some hacks to get the most out of a winter glamping break.

  • Live and die by the Wood-burner! Nothing says “luxury camping” like a good wood-burner. Once you get that fire going, it’s game on. Grab a log or two (or five) and keep that fire roaring all day long. You’ll soon find yourself lounging in front of it, wearing your fluffiest socks and feeling at home.
  • Dress for the Occasion; Outside might be a winter wonderland, but inside your Yurt is a haven of warmth. Layering is key when you venture out. Start with thermal wear (think leggings and base layers), add a cozy sweater, then top it off with your favourite puffer jacket. And of course, you’ll need your trusty bobble hat and chunky scarf, just for the best photos for the grid!
  • Hot water bottles; Check that your glamping site has them and if not pop them in the bag.  Ideal to warm you on a winter walk or pop to the end of the bed so its toasty by your toes
  • Woolly top and bottom! Bobble hats and Bed socks are key. Keep those extremities cosy and the rest doesn’t have to work so hard.

Cooking on the Wood-Burner

Cooking on wood burner sounds romantic and rustic and here are a few tips to make things super easy.

Here’s how to become the glamping Nigella you were always meant to be:

  • Cast Iron cookware: If you’re going to cook on the wood-burner, you’ll need a good cast-iron pan or Dutch oven. These amazing pots hold heat well and are perfect for slow-cooked stews, chunky soups, or even a skillet breakfast (sizzling bacon and eggs). The key is patience—let that fire do its thing – the less prodding and poking the better!
  • Master the Heat Zones: The heat plate on your burner is like a magical, ever-changing realm of cooking. The back of the plate is going to be super-hot—perfect for simmering soups and sauces. The front of the plate is a little cooler, so you can use it to cook eggs or fry things like a pro.
  • Toast Your Bread: Toasting bread on a wood-burner heat plate? Pop your slices directly on the plate, flip once, and you’ll get golden perfection. You’ll have the best toast this side of the Cotswolds, no doubt about it. Just try not to eat the whole loaf.
  • Marshmallows. Need I Say S’More?  If you don’t toast marshmallows on your winter glamping trip, did you even go?! If it’s too wet to start a campfire outside just open the door to the wood-burner and roast those gooey, sugary clouds over the flames. Take it to the next level with a classic s’more. Grab some chocolate and graham crackers, sandwich it all together, and try not to burn your tongue!

Soak in the Peace and Tranquillity of a Wood-Fired Hot Tub

The ultimate way to unwind after a long day of walking is in a wood burning hot tub. Picture this: You’re in a tub, surrounded by trees, the steam rising into the cool night air, the crackling fire providing warmth, and the stars overhead twinkling like diamonds.

It doesn’t get better than this.

  • Soak in Serenity: There’s nothing like sinking into a warm, wood-fired hot tub after a chilly walk or a busy day of glamping adventures. The soothing warmth of the water paired with the crackling of the fire lets you relax in complete peace.
  • Enjoy the Silence: A wood-fired hot tub is all about quiet moments. With no loud jets or blaring music, you can hear nothing but nature and the fire crackling. It’s the perfect chance to disconnect, reflect, and just enjoy being in the moment.
  • The Best Nightcap Ever: Grab a glass of wine, hot toddy, or just a cup of herbal tea, and enjoy it while soaking in the warmth. It’s like hitting the reset button for your soul. You’re not just glamping—you’re living your best life.

Stargazing in winter

Winter is the time to embrace the winter sky. Stargazing in the countryside is like seeing a whole new world—clear, quiet, and free of city lights. Grab a blanket and a cup of something hot, and just enjoy the moment. You might even catch a shooting star, or see if you can name the constellations.

Why is winter glamping extra special at Mrs Mills Yurts?

We will light your Wood burner before you arrive so your Yurt is already cosy.  We will also make sure your hot tub is hot and ready to dive straight into.

During winter we bring our arrival times forward from 1pm so you can make the most of the shorter days.

There is an extensive camp fire menu so enjoying a hearty meal is even easier.  Warming through on the wood-burner is super easy in the cast iron cookware that is provided.  Enjoy a Beouf Bourgignon or Eight hour Chilli con carne with a glass of Red by candlelight on your set table.

Cocktails are available and during winter, seasonal warming drinks or a full-bodied red wine served in the hot tub are an extra special touch.

Mrs Mills offers a stargazing package that makes the experience even more magical. Set up with everything you need to enjoy the night sky in ultimate comfort. Sleeping bags and heavy Welsh blankets and sheepskin rugs will keep you cosy on the reclining loungers with hot water bottles to make sure your toes stay nice and warm.  Baileys hot chocolate is served to you once you’re tucked in.  It’s the perfect way to enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside night sky, with a little extra luxury.

May Hill is a popular destination for walkers as it is a National Trust protected site.  In winter the footpaths are serenely quiet. With numerous footpaths weaving through rolling hills and wooded areas, it’s easy to find a peaceful trail that you will enjoy. From leisurely strolls to more invigorating hikes, there’s something for every level of adventurer. If you’re bringing your dog they will love the new scents, and you’ll adore the views—especially if the landscape is dusted with snow – May hill is the highest point in Gloucestershire and will be the first to catch the snow.
