The Forest of Dean is a hub of fantastic activities to keep everyone entertained. There is so much choice you would need to stay for a fortnight to get through them all!
Without even getting in the car, you can access miles of walks in and around May hill, which incorporates the national footpaths of the Gloucestershire and Wysis way. You can easily convince the kids to get to the top by borrowing our kite and promising to see the wild ponies and the beautiful Belted Galloway rare breed cows with their huge bells!
Walking in the other direction through the quarry and wildflower meadows you can reach the village, a playground and an award winning artisan bakery; The Forest Bakehouse. A 30 minute walk taking in the rolling Gloucestershire countryside. The bakehouse has a fantastic café and the cake and coffee is to die for.
In the local village there is a fantastic Cookery School; Hart’s Barn. They offer everything from Chocolate making for groups, Family cooking and bread making. Well worth checking out for a rainy day.
Also within walking distance is Hillside Brewery. A fantastic and multi award winning Microbrewery where you can book tastings and tours, or visit their shop to pick up a selection of great beersand local spirits. They often run events ranging from mini music festivals, outdoor cinema or even Spa retreats! Check out their events page for more info.
Just under 3 miles away is the International Bird of Prey Centre which is a great and informative day out. Over 60 species of stunning birds on display.
There are so many things to do from the site before you’ve even begun to explore The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. The Wye offers Canoeing – an absolute must do. Paddle down the Wye, stop at a pub for lunch – scrambling up the bank to a well deserved pint of local ale! The river offers paddleboarding, boat cruises and wild swimming. Symonds Yat is a stunning part of the river where Peregrine Falcons nest and you can climb the Rock for incredible vistas and far-reaching views.
The Forest of Dean encompasses miles of glorious natural English woodland full of tourist attractions to suit everyone.
The forestry commission sites have stunning trails, lakes, arboretums for the nature enthusiast.
Beechenhurst Foresty site is a must visit for families – great walking tracks – there is usually a Julia Donaldson themed find and seek trail and a great playground and café. We have spent many a day there come rain or shine! It is also the gateway to the Forest of Dean sculpture trail where some great walking and natural sculptures from local artists are well worth visiting. Junior Go Ape is here too with lovely picnic spots and BBQ areas you can make a full day of it. We can organize BBQ boxes and Cheese hampers for you to take with you – and always ask to borrow our amazing hampers and rugs to fell just a little more glampy!
There are extreme sports, Go Ape for juniors and big adult kids too, Segway tours, and world-renowned cycle trials – for the experienced mountain bikers or the leisurely family cycle trails. Great cycle hire at Pedalabikeaway who have everything from mountain bikes to bike seats for kids and dog trailers.
We have a young family and have spent many a school holiday returning to some fantastic attractions all within 30 minutes away. Puzzlewood is a magical area of the forest, with enchanted trails that have inspired authors and been home to Stormtroopers and Time Lords in numerous films you’d recognize.
Just next door is Perrygrove railway – a fabulous attraction for families or miniature steam railway enthusiasts. With an amazing playground and a lovely train journey it’s a fab one to add to the list.
Fab crazy golf can be found at Taurus crafts and it’s a great little craft center to wander around if the weather turns very British. There’s plenty to keep you busy when the rain comes too – Littledean Jail isn’t for the fainthearted, but there is a beautiful Art Deco cinema in Cinderford where you’ll see blockbusters in the most simplest way with tickets from £3 and Popcorn for a £1. However, nothing beats getting cosy inside the Yurt, getting the log burner going and toasting marshmallows inside while a pan of hot chocolate simmers on top. Bliss.
