Here at Mrs Mills’ Yurts, we are spoilt when it comes to local eateries and pubs right on our doorstep. We have taken the time to write up some of our favourites to give you a little inspiration for when you come and stay at our home.

We have everything that you could want just a stone’s throw away, from traditional pubs packed with secret nooks and crannies, to upmarket restaurants that would blow the mind of even the finest foodie. If we’ve missed any, feel free to give the house a knock if you want to tell us about a hidden gem that you have found.

The Glasshouse – May Hill – Gl17 0NN

Glasshouse Mayhill

Our closest pub, just over a mile away, is The Glasshouse – one of the most renowned eateries in the area. Take a short, 25-minute stroll and see the spectacular views that will more than whet your appetite for some of the finest home cooking that the Royal Forest of Dean has to offer. The menu is simple yet superb and has something for everyone. From steaks and hearty specials through to fish and probably its most famous dish: delicious Thai Green Curry.

Children under 13 are not allowed inside the pub, but the ample beer garden makes eating outside with them a real summer treat. Booking is not essential, but is probably a good idea for groups of four and over. For the more intimate tables of two, just turn up and have a drink before Steve the owner or one of his team finds you a table.

Our Glasshouse choice: steak and a pint of their fine Guinness

The Farmers Boy – Longhope – Gl17 0LP

the-farmers-boy-inn

Less than one and a half miles away is The Farmers Boy – one of our favourite Inns, based in nearby Longhope. It takes less than 2 minutes in the car and is a very beautiful hour walk that avoids the main road – plenty of time to work up enough of an appetite to relish one of their award-winning pies. Vegans and vegetarians are also catered for and the team are more than willing to try and accommodate every food request.

There is a great children’s menu and a really spacious outdoor area where they can play whilst you enjoy a cold drink in the sun. The Farmers Boy owner is also somewhat of a local celebrity, having featured in the Channel 4 TV show Four in a Bed, where he showcased his hospitality skills and the rooms they have on offer where visitors can stay overnight.

Our Farmers Boy choice would have to be the Guinness and Ale pie or the beer-battered fish and chips.

The Red Hart at Blaisdon – GL17 0AH

Red Hart Blaisdon

At the heart of this romantic looking village – made famous for its glorious plums – is the Red Hart Inn. Just under 3 miles away from us, their amazing food makes every visit a treat. If you can, try and visit in early spring, because the lane down to the village is lined with thousands of daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells, and will really take your breath away.

From hearty Sunday roasts through to cheeky Friday night last-minute suppers, The Red Hart caters for every need. There are new specials every day and you can eat in the restaurant area or the main bar.

In the summer, there is an amazing beer garden with enough room and play facilities to entertain even the biggest kid and they quite often have a range of animals, such as pigs and chickens (safely tucked away), wandering around the grounds.

In the warmer months there are regular BBQ’s and if you are with us around Bonfire Night, The Red Hart has a real community-feel display that we all love to attend.

Our choice – a local cider in the sun, with a BBQ’d pulled pork roll

The Moody Cow – Upton Bishop – HR9 7TT

Moody Cow Upton Bishop

Last (for now) on our list of the fabulous four is the Moody Cow in Upton Bishop. Just over 6 miles away, this probably requires a short drive or taxi trip, unless you are planning a good old yomp through the countryside.

Don’t be put off by the name! The greeting and atmosphere is nearly as amazing as the food. I have never not been tempted by one of the specials on offer and the wine list would give the finest French Riviera bar a good run for its money. If wine is not your tipple, then the choice of Gin’s will blow you away.

The last time we visited I went for the scallops to start, followed by the seabass for main, and it was perfect. I reasoned that fish was a reasonably “light” choice of main and this gave me the courage to venture into the world of desserts, which did not disappoint and left me packed to the rafters with fine food and wine.

Our choice – anything from the specials board and especially the fish of the day.
